What is a Vape Mod?

Vape mods are typically large vape devices that are a lot more powerful than other types of vapes such as pod systems or vape pens. Mods can come in a variety of different types, though the most common is a box mod. Vape mods come with a range of advanced settings and features that are catered more towards the experienced vaper, allowing them to refine and control the way they vape with more detail. These features often include modes such as temperature control, variable wattage, and more.

On top of this, mods also come with screens that display a range of vaping information such as your battery life, current wattage as well as offering navigation to cycle through the different settings.

You can find vape mods that use both external batteries and replaceable batteries, though the mods that use external batteries tend to offer more power. These are often referred to as single-battery mods, dual battery mods and internal battery mods. Most vape kits will come with a mod included in the kit, as well as a coil, tank and other accessories.

Box mods

Box mods are a popular type of vape mod characterised by their rectangular shape, hence the name ‘box’. They often feature a digital display screen, adjustable wattage or temperature control, and removable batteries. Box mods are versatile and offer a wide range of customisation options, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced vapers.

AIO mods

AIO stands for ‘All-In-One’ mods. These devices combine the tank and battery into a single unit, offering a compact and convenient vaping solution. AIO mods are generally user-friendly and often feature a built-in battery, adjustable airflow, and refillable tanks. They are a great option for vapers looking for simplicity without compromising on performance quality.

Squonk mods

Squonk mods, also known as bottom-feeding mods, are unique devices that include a built-in bottle (squonk bottle) for storing e-liquid. They are primarily used with rebuildable atomizers (RDAs) and function by squeezing the bottle to feed e-liquid into the atomizer. Squonk mods are popular among vaping enthusiasts who enjoy the convenience of dripping without the need to carry separate e-liquid bottles.

Mechanical mods

Mechanical mods – often referred to as mech mods – are stripped-down, simplistic vape devices that operate without electronic circuitry or safety features. They consist of a metal tube or box with a firing button and a battery compartment. Mechanical mods are mainly used by experienced vapers who have a thorough understanding of Ohm's law, battery safety, and coil building. They provide a direct power output based on the battery's voltage and the resistance of the attached atomizer.

Vape Mod FAQs

When deciding what type of device is best suited to you, it's important to consider a couple of things - your experience level and what you're trying to get out of vaping. If you're new to vaping and have limited knowledge, we recommend starting off with a pod kit as they are easier to use and the lower power outputs are easier to manage. This is also the better option for transitioning smokers.

On the other hand, if you're more experienced or you have a particular interest in exhaling large clouds of vapour and performing vape tricks, then we recommend getting your hands on one of our high performing vape mods.

Wattage Mode

Also known as Power Mode, this is the most widely used vape mode. Wattage mode allows you to adjust the power output in watts, influencing the heat produced by the coil and affecting the vapour production and flavour intensity. It offers a straightforward and user-friendly vaping experience.

Temperature Control Mode

Temperature Control (TC) mode allows you to set and control the temperature of the coil. By preventing the coil from overheating, TC mode provides a consistent and controlled vape, reducing the chances of dry hits. This mode is especially popular among users who enjoy a precise and customised vaping experience.

Variable Voltage Mode

Variable Voltage (VV) mode enables you to adjust the voltage output to the coil. Similar to wattage mode, VV mode affects the heat produced by the coil and can influence the overall vaping experience. Some vapers prefer VV mode for its ability to fine-tune the vape to their personal preferences.

Bypass Mode

Bypass mode essentially turns your vape device into an unregulated device similar to a mechanical mod. In this mode, the device delivers direct power from the battery to the coil without any regulation. Bypass mode is often favoured by experienced vapers who enjoy a more traditional, unregulated vaping experience.

It's worth noting that not all vape devices support every vape mode. The availability of vaping modes may vary depending on the specific device and its features. Always refer to the user manual or manufacturer's specifications to understand which vape modes are supported by your device.

While browsing through all this information about vaping, you may have come across the terms regulated mod and unregulated or mech mod. These are two different types of box mod with some key differences.

Most of the box mods available here at Vaping 101 are regulated mods - vape mods that have built-in safety features that prevent short-circuiting or overheating.

In contrast, unregulated mods, also called mechanical or mech mods, do not have these additional features. In an unregulated box mod, the battery is directly connected to the coil. Vapers who use unregulated mods need to have a strong understanding of ohm's law and vaping safety. They are usually used with an RDA (Rebuildable Dripping Atomiser).

Mechanical mods used to be more popular in the vaping community, but these days regulated mods are so much safer and better performing that most vapers opt for regulated mods instead.

Vape mods are ideal for vapers who are looking for a step up from their current vape pen or vape kit. We don't recommend them for complete beginners. If you're new to vaping, we recommend checking out our all in one vape kits or starter kits. These contain everything you need to start vaping and you can get beginner-friendly kits from some of the biggest names in vaping, including Voopoo, Vaporesso, GeekVape, Smok, and more.

Most vape mods have a 510 connection, which is the standard threading for tanks and atomizers in the vaping industry. This means that you can typically use any tank or atomizer with a 510 connection on a vape mod. However, it's essential to ensure compatibility between the mod's power output and the coil resistance range recommended by the tank or atomizer manufacturer for optimal performance and safety.
